Remembering the Nappanee Tornado: Ten Years Later
First responders and city officials recall their memories of the EF-3 tornado that struck Nappanee, Ind. October 18, 2007 on the tenth anniversary of the weather event. The tornado had sustained winds of 165 mph and cut a half mile wide path through the southeast side of the town. Over 100 businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed, but few injuries were reported and there were no deaths.
World War II Veteran Flies Again
Ninety-four-year-old World War II veteran Harold Wakefield got a chance to fly again Friday morning courtesy of New Horizons Aviation. During the war, Wakefield served in the Army Air Corps as the navigator on a B-29 bomber crew and saw action in the Pacific. This was Wakefield's first time flying seince the end of the war in 1945.
Finally Home: The Veteran's Headstone Project
Founded in 2011 by LaGrange resident Jean McKibben, The Veteran's Headstone Project works to replace or restore the worn and damanged headstones of veterans throughout LaGrange County. The project has replaced more than 150 headstones thus far, at a rate of about 30 per year. The project is funded entirely by donations.
The Last Dance with Arnie Johnson & The Midnight Special
Arnie Johnson and the Midnight Special play their last concert at the Knights of Columbus building, 2206 E. 23rd St., in Lawrence, Kan. on April 5, 2015. After regularly playing monthly dances at the building for more than four decades, Johnson and his band are searching for a new home because the Knights of Columbus is getting out of the dance hall business and putting its building up for sale.
